HC asks JU to reinstate Amarto's candidature for JUCSU VP post

The High Court has directed Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities to reinstate the candidature of Amarto Ray for the post of vice president (VP) in the upcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election.

The bench comprising Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Miah and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order following a hearing on a writ petition filed by Ray, a student of the 2017-18 academic session from the Department of Archaeology.

Advocate Manzur Al Matin represented the petitioner, while Advocate Shishir Manir appeared on behalf of the university authorities during the hearing.

Ray, who also serves as the president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union's JU unit, alleged that the university had unlawfully scrapped his candidacy, prompting him to seek redress from the court.

Following the court's directive, the JU administration has been instructed to reinstate his nomination, paving the way for Ray to contest in the long-anticipated JUCSU election.

The JUCSU and hall union elections are scheduled to be held on September 11, marking the first such polls in 33 years. 

A total of 179 candidates are vying for 25 JUCSU posts, with 10 candidates contesting for the VP post and nine for the position of general secretary (GS).

Seven student panels are participating in the upcoming election.
