JUCSU election underway

After a 33-year hiatus, Jahangirnagar University is holding its Central Students' Union (JUCSU) and Hall Sangsad elections. Voting started on Thursday at 9:00 am and will continue uninterrupted until 5:00pm.

The campus is buzzing with excitement for the JUCSU elections, with all preparations in place for a peaceful voting process.

Robust security measures have been implemented across the campus.

Following the government's collapse in a student-public uprising, there has been a strong push to elect new leadership and foster a harmonious student environment.

Students are hopeful these elections will restore a culture of democratic participation on campus.

In this election, 177 candidates are contesting for the Central Union, and 445 for the Hall Sangsad.

Nine candidates are vying for the Vice President (VP) position and eight for the General Secretary (GS) position in the Central Union.

The constitution has been amended to increase the number of posts from 14 to 25, with six reserved for female students to boost their leadership participation. All active campus organisations are taking part in the elections.

Security is a top priority, with the army on standby as the primary force.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani stated on Wednesday in the capital that comprehensive security measures are in place, involving police, Ansar, and BGB, with the army ready to step in if needed.

Votes will be counted using a special OMR machine, with results displayed instantly on a large screen in the Senate Hall and updated hourly across various campus locations.
