Mastermind in health sector corruption Mithu arrested in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested Motazzrul Islam Mithu, a well-known contractor in the health sector during the Awami League government, in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday night.

DMP Joint Police Commissioner (Detective-North) Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan informed the media that Mithu faces charges filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). 

He is scheduled to be handed over to the ACC on Thursday.

ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain stated that the commission has approved a case against Mithu for embezzlement and money laundering through a syndicate, involving the acquisition of illegal assets worth approximately Tk 76 crore

Mithu's name previously surfaced in the 2016 Panama Papers. 

Allegations suggest he misappropriated significant funds by leveraging his influence over the supply of goods and development projects through his contracting companies.
