Bhanga thana vandalism, arson: Nixon Chy named as main accused

A case has been filed in connection with the attack and vandalism at Bhanga Police Station in Faridpur. 

Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury Nixon, a former MP from Faridpur-4 constituency comprising Bhanga, Sadarpur, and Char Bhadrasan and a member of the Jubo League's presidium, has been named as the main accused.

On Tuesday, Bhanga Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Azaduzzaman filed the case, naming 29 people and listing many others as suspects. 

The attack and vandalism took place at Bhanga Police Station on Monday afternoon.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Shamsul Azam provided this information at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday.

Police stated that the attack and vandalism at the police station caused damage of approximately Tk40 lakh.

Incidentally, on September 4, an Election Commission gazette reassigned Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila under Faridpur-4 constituency, consisting of Bhanga, Sadarpur, and Charbhadrasan, to Faridpur-2 constituency. 

In protest, the people of Bhanga blocked the Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Barisal highways on Friday, September 5.

However, following assurances from Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mizanur Rahman that afternoon, the protesters suspended the programme for three days. They stated that if the issue was not resolved by Monday, they would resume the blockade from Tuesday.

The protesters observed a three-day morning-evening blockade from September 9-11. They announced another three-day blockade programme from last Sunday (September 14-16), excluding Friday and Saturday.

On the first day of the third phase of the programme, the Dhaka-Khulna highway, Dhaka-Barishal highway, and the Rajbari-Bhanga and Dhaka-Khulna railway lines were blocked on Sunday. 

As a result, three trains were stranded at Hamidi and Bhanga junctions and Rajbari in Bhanga, causing significant distress to passengers.

In this context, the Home Affairs Adviser announced a strict suppression of the movement on Sunday afternoon. 

Additionally, on Sunday, a case was filed under the Speedy Trial Act with Bhanga Police Station, naming 90 people, including the chairman of Algi and Hamirdi unions, as accused under the Agnitanama. 

Algi Union Parishad Chairman M. M. Siddique was arrested in that case.

On the second day of the third phase of the blockade, violent incidents, including widespread attacks, vandalism, and arson, occurred at Bhanga Police Station, Upazila Complex, Bhanga Highway Police Station, and various government offices.

Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Kamrul Hasan Molla stated that preparations are underway for a case regarding the violent incident that took place in the Bhanga Upazila Complex last Monday.
