Low pressure in Bay of Bengal triggers nationwide rain forecast

Active monsoon winds are sweeping across Bangladesh, with the Meteorological Office forecasting rain nationwide due to a low-pressure system forming in the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas.

Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman told Daily Samakal that the capital is unlikely to see further rain today. 

However, the low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, particularly in the Khulna region, and may move toward the northwest of the country. 

Another low-pressure system could develop in the East Central Bay of Bengal and nearby North Bay of Bengal around September 24–25, potentially intensifying but unlikely to affect Bangladesh’s coast. 

The current system may move toward Odisha, India, with seaports possibly raising warning signal number 3.

The weather forecast at 9:00 am on Monday indicates the monsoon axis extends over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, the low-pressure center, southern Bangladesh, and Assam. 

The monsoon is moderately active in Bangladesh and the North Bay of Bengal. 

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds are expected in many parts of Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions, and some areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Sylhet divisions.

 Heavy rain is likely in parts of Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram.

In the capital, 105 mm of rain fell from Sunday night to 9:00 am on Monday, with 71 mm recorded between 6:00am and 9:00 am. 

This caused knee-to-waist-deep flooding in areas like Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Manipuripara, New Market, Asad Gate, and Jigatola, disrupting traffic. 

Flooding persisted in New Market until around 10:30 am. 

Commuters in Fakirapul, Kakrail, Malibagh, Rajarbagh, and Motijheel faced waist-deep water. Feni recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 116 mm.
