Thousands of NID cards, election seals found in Fatulla garbage dump

In a surprising discovery, police recovered several bags containing approximately 4,000 National Identity Cards (NIDs), polling agent identity cards, and election seals from a garbage dump near Fatulla Stadium in Narayanganj Sadar Upazila. 

The items were found along the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road on Monday evening.

According to police and local residents, a group of individuals in a white microbus was seen leaving the bags at the dump site. Suspicious locals inspected the bags and discovered thousands of laminated NID cards, polling agent cards, and election seals from various national and local government elections. 

Police were promptly informed and recovered the bags from the scene.

Md. Abdus Sattar, Assistant Election Officer of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila, filed a general diary (GD) with Fatulla Model Police Station. 

The GD noted that over 4,000 laminated NID cards, primarily linked to Gazipur Sadar Upazila, were found in the garbage pile. The items were collected in the presence of Election Commission officials and taken into custody.

Md. Hasinuzzaman, Additional Superintendent of Police (Circle K) for Narayanganj District, told Daily Samakal that the recovered cards are old and laminated. 

He added that the Election Commission was notified, and officials retrieved the items. 

"If a case is filed, we will proceed according to the law," he stated.

Rakibuzzaman, Additional Election Commissioner of Narayanganj District, clarified that the recovered NID cards are not smart cards but older versions.

 He noted that the cards do not belong to residents of Narayanganj, with most addresses linked to Gazipur. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
