No explanation to be provided on 'Shapla' Symbol: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin announced that the 'Shapla' symbol was initially requested by Nagorik Oikya, but their request was denied. Subsequently, the National Citizen Party (NCP) also sought the same symbol, but it was not allocated to them either. 

The Election Commission (EC) has decided not to provide any reasons for withholding the 'Shapla' symbol, he added.

The CEC made these comments to journalists at his office in the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Thursday, while discussing preparations for the 13th National Parliament elections.

Addressing concerns about the 'Shapla' symbol, CEC Nasir Uddin stated that the Election Commission views the non-allocation of the symbol as a potential challenge but remains steadfast in its decision. 

He emphasised that the EC operates independently, free from external influence, and is committed to conducting its duties impartially.

The CEC also confirmed that the election is scheduled for February and assured that the EC will ensure a level playing field for all participants. 

He added that maximum efforts, including the deployment of adequate forces, will be made to achieve this goal.
