MPO-listed teachers block Shahbagh intersection

MPO-listed teachers and staff of private educational institutes have staged a blockade at the Shahbagh intersection of the capital with three demands on Wednesday at around 2pm. The blockade has brought traffic in the area to a standstill. 

Previously, teachers brought out a procession from the Central Shaheed Minar towards Shahbagh. Police put up a barricade in front of the Shahbagh Police Station in front of the National Museum. Teachers broke the barrier and staged a blockade at Shahbagh intersection, chanting various slogans. 

Their demands are: 20 per cent increase in basic house rent (minimum Tk 3,000); raising medical allowance for both teachers and staff to Tk 1,500; and increasing festival bonus for staff to 75 per cent of their basic salary.

Protesting teachers and staff gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar on Wednesday morning. They announced a blockade at Shahbagh intersection at noon if their demands were not met by then. They postponed the blockade following a request from Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser for the southern region of the National Citizen Party (NCP). However, as their demand remained unaddressed, they went ahead with the decision to block Shahbagh intersection.
