BIWTA electrician beaten to death in Jatrabari

Police recovered the body of Anwar Hossain Babu, 43, an electrician at the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Sadarghat office, from a garage in Jatrabari's Uttar Sharifpara area on Friday morning.

His hands and feet were tied, and authorities suspect he was beaten to death after being accused of theft.

The body was found in a garage owned by Faruk Mia.

Jatrabari Police Station OC Kamruzzaman Talukder told Daily Samakal that an autopsy would confirm the cause of death, but initial findings indicate severe beating.

Police are investigating and collecting CCTV footage from the area. Several suspects are being questioned.

Anwar, a resident of Mridhabari in Matuail, lived with his wife and two children. He left home early Friday and was later found bleeding in the garage. His brother, Delwar Hossain, said locals reported that Anwar had been beaten with rods and iron angles by local security personnel on suspicion of theft. He died before reaching the hospital.

Delwar denied claims of drug addiction, stating his brother had mental health issues but was not a drug user. A police source mentioned Anwar had previously been in a rehabilitation center, though this remains unconfirmed by family.

No case has been filed yet, but police say action will follow if the family files complaint.

The incident highlights a rise in mob violence.

According to human rights group Odhikar, 153 people died in beatings across Bangladesh from August 9, 2024, to September 30, 2025.
