Top terror Mamun shot dead in broad daylight

Tariq Saif Mamun, 55, identified by police as a listed top terrorist, was gunned down in broad daylight in front of Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Old Dhaka on Monday morning.

The attack happened at 10:55 am. 

Eyewitnesses said two masked youths on foot chased Mamun and shot him at point-blank range just 10–15 feet outside the hospital’s main gate.

Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali Zone) Fazlul Haque confirmed that Mamun sustained four bullet wounds. He was first rushed to National Medical College Hospital and then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 11:45 am.

CCTV footage shows Mamun, wearing a full-sleeve T-shirt, sprinting toward the hospital gate in panic. He stumbled and fell inside the premises, moments before the two attackers—wearing masks and caps—followed him in and opened fire with pistols in what witnesses described as a “movie-style” execution.

 The gunmen then fled toward Government Kabi Nazrul College.

A hospital security guard on duty said Mamun had left the gate at 10:51 am, walked a short distance onto the road, and was immediately targeted. 

Hearing the shots, he ran back toward the hospital for safety but was chased and shot.

Ward Master Mohibullah of Dhaka National Medical College said staff heard gunfire and rushed out to find Mamun lying in a pool of blood. They carried him inside for emergency treatment before the transfer.

Police revealed that Mamun, son of SM Iqbal and originally from Lakshmipur district, lived in a rented house in Aftabnagar, Dhaka. 

He had reportedly come to the area to appear before a judge’s court, though it remains unclear whether he was the plaintiff or the accused.

Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner Ahsan Uddin Sami stated that Mamun was a top-listed terrorist who was once a close associate of another notorious criminal, Sanjidul Islam Emon. A prolonged power struggle between the two factions over control of the underworld is believed to be the motive behind the killing.

Police have launched a manhunt to arrest the killers and are examining CCTV footage and witness statements.
