BGB deployed in Dhaka, three other districts to maintain law and order

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in four districts, including the capital Dhaka, as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and prevent any disruption to law and order.

Besides Dhaka, additional BGB forces have been positioned in Gopalganj, Faridpur, and Madaripur.

Confirming the deployment, BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam stated, “BGB patrol teams are actively operating in coordination with other law enforcement agencies to maintain normalcy. All necessary preparations have been completed.”

Sources indicate that the stepped-up security measures were prompted by a series of recent incidents in the capital and elsewhere, including cocktail explosions, vehicle and bus arsons, and isolated violence. 

Notable incidents occurred in areas such as New Eskaton, Agargaon, Airport Road, Hatirjheel, Mirpur, and Hazaribagh, largely in connection with programmes announced by banned political outfits. 

These events had caused public anxiety.

The enhanced BGB presence aims to keep the situation under control and thwart any potential sabotage.

This is the second recent deployment: on the morning of 12 November, 14 BGB platoons were initially sent to Dhaka and surrounding areas (12 platoons in Dhaka and 2 outside the capital) to maintain overall security.

The latest reinforcement comes ahead of a significant development scheduled for Monday, 17 November, when the International Crimes Tribunal is set to deliver its verdict in the crimes-against-humanity case filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three others for alleged killings during the anti-discrimination student movement. 

Nationwide BGB deployment has been ordered to ensure law and order around the verdict announcement.
