India's statement on Sheikh Hasina's death sentence

India's Ministry of External Affairs announced on Monday that it has taken note of the death sentence issued by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reaffirming New Delhi's dedication to advancing "the best interests of the people of Bangladesh."

The statement came shortly after the tribunal convicted Hasina in absentia for crimes against humanity during last year's July uprising.

"As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country," read the statement.

"We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end," it added.
