Child trapped 35 feet deep in abandoned tubewell in Tanore, rescue operation continues

A two-year-old boy remains trapped 35 feet underground after falling into an abandoned tubewell pipe in Koelhat Uttarpara village of Panchandar Union, Tanore upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.

The child, identified as Md Sajid, son of Rakib Hossain of the same village, fell into the uncovered test boring while playing near his house around 1:30 pm.

Tanore Police Station OC Md Shahinuzzaman said fire service teams rushed to the spot immediately and have been carrying out a non-stop rescue efforts since then.

“The pipe has a diameter of about five inches and goes down roughly 35 feet. The child responded to calls a few hours ago and is believed to be alive,” the OC said, adding that oxygen is now being supplied through a pipe.

A regular team from Tanore Fire Station was later reinforced by specialised rescue units from Rajshahi city and Chapainawabganj. Rescuers are cautiously digging a parallel pit beside the tubewell to reach the boy, a complex and delicate operation.

An ambulance and medical team are on standby at the scene. Local administration, police and fire service officials say every effort is being made to bring Sajid out alive.
