Fire in multi-storey building in Keraniganj, 14 units of fire service on spot

A fire broke out early Saturday morning in a multi-storey building named Jabale Nur Tower in Babubazar, Keraniganj, Dhaka. 

The fire service received the information at 5:37 am and reached the spot within eight minutes, at 5:45 am.

Fourteen fire service units, including teams from Keraniganj, Sadarghat and Siddiq Bazar stations, are still working to bring the blaze under control. 

Firefighters rescued 42 people trapped inside the building and brought them to safety using various staircases. No casualties have been reported so far.

According to the fire service, the fire originated on the ground floor of the building, which houses cloth and wire godowns. 

Locals said winter clothes were also stored in an underground section.

The building is owned by Haji Faruk Hossain, a Jatiya Party candidate contesting the upcoming parliamentary election in the Dhaka-3 constituency. 

Attempts to contact him remained unsuccessful.

Bangabazar Fire Service leader Hemayet Molla said the teams responded immediately, but the fire has not yet been fully extinguished.

Keraniganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Umar Faruk has formed a five-member committee to investigate the cause of the incident. 

The committee is headed by South Keraniganj Circle AC Land Aftab Ahmed and includes members from the police, fire service, factory inspectorate and the upazila engineering department.
