Nipah Virus spreads to 35 districts in Bangladesh

Nipah virus infections have now been confirmed in 35 districts. 

In 2025, four fatalities from the virus were reported across the country, with all confirmed cases proving fatal. 

The most recent victim died while receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), five confirmed Nipah-related deaths occurred in 2024, involving five infected individuals.

These details were shared during a view-exchange meeting titled "Spread and Risks of Nipah Virus" held at the IEDCR auditorium on Wednesday, chaired by IEDCR Director Professor Tahmina Shirin.

IEDCR Scientific Officer Sharmin Sultana highlighted that Nipah outbreaks occur seasonally in Bangladesh every winter. It is a highly lethal virus, with approximately 72% of infected patients succumbing to the disease. 

Transmission primarily happens through consumption of raw date palm sap in winter, often contaminated by bat secretions. Additionally, person-to-person spread accounts for about 28 percent of cases.

She noted that no effective treatment or vaccine currently exists for Nipah, complicating control efforts.

Dr. Syed Moinuddin Sattar, Associate Scientist in the Infectious Diseases Department at icddr,b and Coordinator of the Nipah surveillance programme, stated that infections have been detected in 35 districts nationwide. Districts with notably higher rates of infection and mortality include Faridpur, Rajbari, Naogaon, and Lalmonirhat.

He added that surveillance has been intensified in high-risk areas, and relevant hospitals have been directed to maintain full preparedness.

The meeting stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns for prevention, emphasising the media's crucial role. 

This year's event aimed to promote avoidance of raw date palm sap and adherence to hygiene practices. 

Director General of the Health Education Directorate, Nazmul Hossain, also attended.

Preventive measures against Nipah Virus

• Avoid drinking raw date palm sap.

• Do not consume fruits that are partially eaten or damaged by insects/bats.

• Wash fruits thoroughly with clean water before eating.

• Seek immediate medical care at the nearest government hospital if Nipah symptoms appear.

• Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water after contact with an infected person.
