Teknaf Border Shooting: Bangladesh summons Myanmar ambassador to protest

Dhaka has lodged a strong protest with Myanmar over cross-border firing that targeted Bangladeshi territory along the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar and seriously injured a 12-year-old girl.

Myanmar’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, U Kyaw Soe Moe, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, where Bangladesh delivered a formal démarche.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry expressed grave concern over the incident in Teknaf’s Whykhong area, describing the unprovoked firing from the Myanmar side as a clear violation of international law and a serious impediment to good-neighbourly relations.

Bangladesh urged Myanmar to take immediate and effective measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents, stressing that internal conflict between the Myanmar government and armed groups must not endanger the lives or livelihoods of Bangladeshi citizens.

The Myanmar Ambassador assured the Ministry that his government would take necessary steps to stop such occurrences and conveyed deep condolences to the injured girl and her family.
