5 policemen attacked while arresting a suspect

Five policemen were critically injured and an accused was snatched from custody following a violent attack in Mymensingh on Tuesday afternoon. 

The incident occurred around 4:00 pm at the Digarkanda Fishery Crossing area in the city.

According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Nazmus Shakib of Kotwali Model Police Station, a five-member police team, led by Investigation Officer SI Farid Ahmed, conducted a raid in the Digarkanda area to arrest Ariful Islam. 

Ariful was a wanted fugitive in a case involving the recent hacking and severe beating of a local man named Russell, who is currently fighting for his life at Pangu Hospital in the capital.

After the police team arrested Ariful and began transporting him to the station, they were ambushed. 

A mob of several hundred people, allegedly led by Ariful’s father, Sagar Ali, attacked the officers with sticks and locally-made weapons.

During the ensuing clash, the attackers hacked and beat the policemen indiscriminately, managed to free Ariful, and abducted him along with his handcuffs. 

The five injured officers were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, with SI Farid Ahmed reporting that their conditions remain critical.

Following the incident, tension spread through the area, prompting a patrol team from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the army to deploy and bring the situation under control.

OC Md. Nazmus Shakib confirmed that police have arrested Sagar Ali on charges of involvement in the attack. 

An operation is currently underway to apprehend the others involved in the assault and to recapture the fugitive, Ariful Islam.
