Independent journalism can fearlessly tell truth to govt: Mahfuz Anam

Independent journalism is the only institution that can fearlessly speak truth to the government, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam declared while addressing authorities directly.

He was speaking at a media conference jointly organised by the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) and the Editors' Council on Saturday morning at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in Khamarbari, Dhaka.

He emphasised that the current moment is crucial for building an accountable society and upholding ethical journalism. 

He noted that government budgets and development projects are ultimately funded by the people.

Describing journalists as "social doctors," Mahfuz Anam explained that, just as individuals visit a doctor to diagnose illnesses, weaknesses, high cholesterol, or vitamin deficiencies—seeking out negative aspects rather than flattery—journalists serve a similar role in society. Their duty is to consistently expose the shortcomings and failures of governance and social systems.

In his address, he covered five key topics, with one focused on newspaper owners and investors. 

He expressed gratitude to those who invest in media but issued a strong caution, "If you approach media investment with the same mindset you use for other industries, that media will never earn the people's trust."

He elaborated that while some invest to drive national development and job creation, journalists contribute to societal progress by identifying flaws and holding power accountable. 

However, he warned owners against pressuring journalism to serve personal business interests, stating, "If you compel journalism to prioritise your commercial goals, the public will reject it." 

He urged media owners to adopt and follow a strict code of conduct.

Opening his speech, Mahfuz Anam reminded fellow journalists that journalism's core purpose is social service. 

He stressed the vital role of independent journalism in fostering democracy, human rights, and a discrimination-free society. 

He highlighted that the constitution grants special protections to two professions—the judiciary and the media—because no society can sustain true democracy without a robust, independent press.

Turning to editors, he noted that an editor's personal and professional conduct influences the entire institution and the broader field of journalism. 

Any ethical lapse or deviation from professional values harms not just one outlet but the profession as a whole.

He also appealed to the judiciary, asserting that an independent judiciary and independent journalism are mutually reinforcing. 

He urged that "contempt of court" not be weaponised to stifle press freedom, reminding that the public has a legitimate right to information about judicial activities.
