HC allows anticipatory bail to Sherpur-3 BNP candidate Mahmudul, 39 others

The High Court (HC) on Monday granted six-week anticipatory bail to Mahmudul Haque Rubel, BNP candidate for Sherpur-3, and 39 others, in a case lodged over the murder of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami contestant Mawlana Rezaul Karim.

A High Court division bench of Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah and Justice Faysal Hasan Arif passed the order after holding hearing on a bail petition.

Senior advocate Ruhul Quddus Kazal moved the plea before the court.

Mawlana Rezaul Karim was critically injured on January 28 during a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters at an election manifesto announcement in Jhenaigati Upazila, Sherpur. He later died en route to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Karim’s widow later filed the case.
