Interim Govt recommends scrapping 24,000 AL-era political harassment cases

The Bangladesh interim government has recommended the withdrawal of 23,865 cases it has identified as politically motivated harassment cases filed during the previous Awami League administration.

These cases, lodged between January 6, 2009, and August 5, 2024, targeted leaders and activists from various opposition parties and organizations, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat-e-Islam, and Gono Odhikar Parishad.

The move is expected to provide relief to nearly 500,000 (five lakh) individuals who were implicated in these cases, which the government describes as politically driven.

To handle the review and withdrawal process, the interim government established district-level committees headed by Deputy Commissioners and an inter-ministerial committee led by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul.

The committees invited applications from affected political parties seeking the withdrawal of cases they claimed were filed for harassment purposes. After examining the petitions, the inter-ministerial committee conducted 39 meetings to scrutinize the submissions and recommended the withdrawal of the 23,865 cases.

Officials noted that the review process remains ongoing, with potential for additional cases to be evaluated and recommended for withdrawal in the future.
