Gaibandha Awami League leader dies in custody

Shamikul Islam Sarkar Lipon, aged 55–57 and president of Palashbari Upazila Awami League, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, while in custody at Gaibandha District Jail.

Lipon, son of Abdul Jobbar Sarkar from Bairi Harinmari village in Palashbari Municipality, fell seriously ill late Saturday night, experiencing severe chest pain around 11 pm. 

He was initially rushed to Gaibandha General (Sadar) Hospital for treatment. As his condition worsened, he was transferred that night to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he died early Sunday morning during treatment.

Gaibandha District Jail Jailer Atiqur Rahman confirmed the incident, noting that Lipon had been suffering from multiple chronic conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure, while in jail.
