Information minister commits to establishing a fear-free media environment

Newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has pledged to foster an environment completely free from fear for journalism across Bangladesh. 

He made this statement while speaking to journalists on his first working day at the Secretariat on Wednesday, shortly after assuming his role.

The minister highlighted that misinformation and rumours represent a significant global challenge in the current era, requiring careful and thoughtful navigation. 

Drawing from personal understanding, Zahir Uddin Swapan noted the profound mental anguish experienced by individuals living under constant fear, particularly those in the media profession who face ongoing surveillance.

He affirmed that since the issues are well-recognised and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has incorporated media freedom into his broader plan, the government will work diligently to establish a fear-free journalism landscape in Bangladesh, InshaAllah.
