High Court forms election tribunal

The High Court Division has established an Election Tribunal to handle petitions related to alleged irregularities in the recent election. 

This follows Section 49 of the Representation of the People Ordinance, which allows for such challenges.

A single bench presided over by Justice Md. Zakir Hossain will hear these election petitions. 

The formation came on the directives of the Chief Justice. The High Court's agenda on Thursday reflected that this bench would assume jurisdiction over all election-related matters under the Representation of the People Ordinance of 1972 (as amended), including the transfer of relevant rules and applications.

Petitioners have a 45-day window from the date of the gazette notification to file appeals against electoral irregularities with this tribunal. The 13th National Parliament election took place on February 12, 2026, covering 299 out of 300 seats. 

Unofficial results for 297 seats were declared the following day, and the Election Commission subsequently published the official gazette listing the elected members.
