Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor submits resignation

Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Education at 10 am on Sunday.

Abdur Rahman Nishat, the Vice-Chancellor's personal secretary and Deputy Registrar of the Vice-Chancellor's Office, confirmed the matter. 

He said, “Sir, he submitted his resignation to the ministry this morning.”

Earlier, there were rumours of the resignation of Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan. Later, on February 10, he said at a press conference, “I want a regular political government to be able to organise the administration in their own way, the political government should take charge and we will fully support them.”

Mentioning the achievements during his tenure, the Vice Chancellor said at the press conference, “The democratic process has been re-established, the parliaments have become effective and the rights of students have found an institutional basis. The university has also made progress in the international arena, improving by about 200 places in the Times Higher Education Ranking, the number of foreign students has increased by about 160 percent and the number of research and publications has increased significantly.”

In addition, highlighting the infrastructural development, he said that a large project worth Tk 2,841 crore is in the implementation stage, which will greatly reduce the deficit in housing, academic buildings and research infrastructure.

The Vice Chancellor said, “He took charge in August 2024 in a special and emergency situation, when the academic activities of the university were practically closed, the administrative structure had become ineffective. In that situation, the first goal was to resume academic activities and restore stability to the university.”
