Khalil-Christensen meeting, Paul Kapur coming to Dhaka

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S. Paul Kapur will visit Bangladesh in early March.

This upcoming visit was discussed on Monday when US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release on the meeting on Monday.

During the discussion, both the Foreign Minister and the US Ambassador highlighted the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, rooted in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a joint commitment to peace and development. 

They reviewed key areas of bilateral cooperation, including trade and investment, defense and security, development partnerships, migration, and people-to-people exchanges, while also addressing the forthcoming visit by Assistant Secretary Kapur.

The Rohingya crisis came up in the conversation as well, with Foreign Minister Rahman expressing appreciation for the United States' ongoing humanitarian support and calling for continued political backing to facilitate the repatriation of displaced Rohingya to Myanmar.

Both sides conveyed optimism that bilateral relations will reach new heights through enhanced cooperation across various fields in the days ahead.

Prior to his meeting with the Foreign Minister, Ambassador Christensen also paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam at her office, where they exchanged views on matters of mutual interest in the bilateral relationship.
