SC acquits Khan Akram of 1971 crimes against humanity conviction

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has acquitted Khan Akram Hossain of Bagerhat, who had earlier been sentenced to imprisonment till natural death in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 War of Liberation.

A five-judge Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury pronounced the judgment, allowing an appeal filed by Akram.

Barrister Imran Abdullah Siddiq appeared for Khan Akram Hossain, while International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam stood for the prosecution.

The then ICT-1 on August 11, 2015, sentenced Sheikh Sirajul Haque, alias Siraj Master, to death and Khan Akram Hossain to imprisonment till natural death in the crimes against humanity case.

Khan Akram later filed an appeal against his conviction.
