Selina Hayat Ivy granted bail in 5 cases

The High Court has granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases, including four murder charges. 

A bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Thursday following hearings on individual bail applications.

Senior lawyer Sara Hossain represented Ivy in court, with Motahar Hossain Saju and others also present.

The cases involve the murders of bus driver Abul Hossain Miji, Abdur Rahman, Md. Yasin, and Parvez, along with one for obstructing police duties. 

The first four murder cases, where victims' family members are the complainants, were lodged at Fatullah Model Police Station. 

They came from shootings that killed four individuals of varying ages on the Dhaka-Narayanganj highway and in the Bhuigarh and Delpara areas during the anti-discrimination movement in July 2024.

The remaining case, filed by police at Sadar Model Police Station, alleges that bricks and stones were thrown at a police vehicle and a cocktail was exploded while Ivy was being transported from her residence, Chunka Kutir. 

This case was registered on May 12, and it also names leaders and activists from Ivy's supporters, the Awami League, and allied organisations as accused.

Ivy was arrested on May 9, 2025, in connection with the Minarul murder case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement and has remained in jail since then. 

Police showed her arrest in a total of five cases at that time.

In November 2025, a High Court bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md. Sagir Hossain granted her bail in those initial five cases, but the Appellate Division stayed the order.

These latest five cases were filed around the period when she received bail in the prior set.

Lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju told Daily Samakal that Ivy cannot be released immediately due to the five additional pending cases against her.

Advocate Awlad Hossain, one of her lawyers, noted that even if bail is secured in these current five cases, she would remain in custody because the earlier five cases are still awaiting hearing in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. 

He expressed hope that this hearing would occur before the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday.
