Writ filed seeking stay on appointment of new governor

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court Division challenging the legality of the government's decision to remove former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur and appoint Md. Mostaqur Rahman as his replacement. 

Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun submitted the petition on Thursday as a public interest litigation, naming the Finance Secretary and other relevant parties as respondents. 

The writ seeks the suspension and cancellation of the new governor's appointment.

On February 25, the government issued notifications through the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance. 

One notification cancelled the remaining term of Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur's appointment as governor, citing public interest, with immediate effect. 

A separate notification appointed Md. Mostaqur Rahman as the new Governor of Bangladesh Bank for a four-year term starting from the date of his joining, under the Bangladesh Bank Order. 

This appointment also required him to renounce any employment or affiliations with other institutions or organisations, and it took immediate effect in the public interest. 

This move has sparked significant controversy and debate over central bank independence and governance.
