Khaleda Zia among 15 individuals named for Swadhinata Puraskar

This year's Swadhinata Puraskar, Bangladesh's highest civilian award, will be conferred upon former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia (posthumously) along with 19 other recipients—14 individuals and five institutions—for their outstanding contributions to the nation.

The Cabinet Division made the announcement in a press release on Thursday, signed by Additional Secretary (Committee and Finance) Humayun Kabir. 

The government has decided to present the Swadhinata Puraskar 2026 to these 15 distinguished individuals and five institutions in recognition of their glorious and meritorious services at the national level.

Begum Khaleda Zia has been nominated posthumously for her comprehensive role in nation-building, encompassing the independence struggle, the advancement of democracy, and the promotion of women's education.

In the Liberation War category, Faujdarhat Cadet College and Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil (posthumously) have been selected for their notable contributions.

Professor Dr. Zahurul Karim is being honoured in the science and technology field.

For contributions in medicine, Dhaka Medical College Hospital receives the award.

In literature, Dr. Ashraf Siddique (posthumously) is a recipient.

In the culture category, A. K. M. Hanif (Hanif Sanket) and Bashir Ahmed (posthumously) have been nominated.

Jobera Rahman (Linu) is recognised in sports, while the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) is awarded for rural development.

In social service or public service, the honourees include Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury (posthumously), S&S Children's Villages International in Bangladesh, Md. Saidul Haque, Gonoshasthaya Kendra, and Maherin Chowdhury (posthumously).

For public administration, Kazi Fazlur Rahman (posthumously) is selected.

In environmental conservation, Mohammad Abdul Baki, Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim, Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua, and Abdul Mukit Majumdar (Mukit Majumdar Babu) have been nominated.

The awards celebrate these exemplary achievements in various sectors that have significantly shaped Bangladesh's progress and heritage.
