Prof Mamun Ahmed made UGC Chairman

Professor Mamun Ahmed, currently serving as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, is set to become the new Chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). 

Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon announced this at a press conference held at the Ministry of Education on Monday. 

The minister stated that the appointment process for Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed as UGC Chairman has reached its final stage, with a formal notification expected to be issued very soon.

Earlier that morning, Professor S. M. A. Fayez resigned from the position of UGC Chairman. 

He submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Education, citing physical illness. 

The Ministry's Public Relations Officer, Khalid Mahmud, confirmed that Professor Fayez had applied for exemption and submitted his letter to the Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division on the same day.

In his letter to the secretary, Professor Fayez noted that he had assumed the role of UGC Chairman on September 5, 2024, as per a notification from the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education. 

However, due to his current physical condition, he was unable to continue performing his duties. 

He therefore requested appropriate measures to relieve him from the post.

Professor SMA Faiz, a former professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Environment at Dhaka University, previously served as Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission from 1993 to 1998 and as Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University from September 2002 to January 2009. 

The interim government, formed after the July Uprising, had appointed him as UGC Chairman on September 5, 2024.
