Former army officer Afzal Naser remanded for six days

A Dhaka court has placed former Director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, Lieutenant Colonel (dismissed) Afzal Naser, on a six-day remand in the murder case of Delwar Hossain during the July uprising in Mirpur. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasib Ullah Pias issued the order on Monday after hearing an application from the investigation officer.

The investigating officer, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, had sought a seven-day remand. 

State prosecutor Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki represented the government, while lawyers for the accused requested cancellation of the remand and grant of bail. 

After hearing to both sides, the court approved the remand for six days.

Afzal Naser was arrested late on Sunday night from a house in Mirpur DOHS, according to Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam.

Case details indicate that on the afternoon of July 19, 2024, during an anti-discrimination student movement in the Mirpur-10 Falpatti area, the accused allegedly ordered firing from multiple directions on the instructions of Sheikh Mamun Khaled. 

Delwar Hossain, a participant in the movement, sustained serious gunshot injuries. He was first taken to the National Heart Institute and later shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he died two days later.

Delwar Hossain’s wife Liza had filed the murder case on July 6, 2025, with Mirpur Model Police Station as the complainant.
