Ivy’s bail plea rejected again

The court has once again rejected the bail application of former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy in the Selim Mandal murder case filed with Siddhirganj Police Station. 

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad delivered the order on Monday afternoon.

Court sources said that on July 20, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, protesters set fire to a building in the Shimrail area of Siddhirganj along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The building housed the Siddhirganj branch of Dutch Bangla Bank, where interior design work was underway. Three workers, including mechanic Selim Mandal, who were engaged in the decoration work, were trapped inside and died in the blaze.

A farmer named Wazed Ali filed the murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station on June 30, 2025. 

In this case, police showed Ivy a temporary arrest warrant through the court on February 26, 2026.

Selina Hayat Ivy faces accusations in a total of 11 cases registered at different police stations in the district involving charges of murder and attempted murder. 

She has already secured bail from the High Court in five of these cases, while bail petitions for five others are pending hearing in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

Lawyers for both the complainant and the defence participated in Monday’s bail hearing. 

Following extended arguments, the judge rejected the application and ordered Ivy to be sent to prison.

After the hearing, Ivy’s lawyer Advocate Awlad Hossain expressed disappointment, noting that this was the 11th case filed against the former mayor. 

He claimed her name did not appear in the case statement and that she had been shown arrested illegally. 

He stated that justice was not received in the lower court and that they would challenge the order in the High Court.

The case file reportedly states that the investigation found the former mayor’s involvement in the arson and violence that led to Selim Mandal’s death during the protest, though the accused maintain that the allegations are baseless.
