Price of 12 kg LPG increased by Tk387

The price of a 12 kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has increased by Tk387 in April. Earlier, the price was Tk1,341 taka, and now it has risen to Tk1,728. This means the price per kilogram has gone up by Tk32.30. This is the highest increase in the price of cooking gas in recent times.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the new prices on Thursday.

The revised prices will take effect from 6 pm today, Thursday.

In early February, the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder was fixed at Tk1,356. Later, after a reduction in import duty on LPG, the price was adjusted downward by Tk15 on February 24, bringing it to Tk1,341.

According to BERC, LPG cylinders of various sizes are available in the market. From now on, the price of LPG will be fixed at Tk144.04 per kilogram, and the prices for cylinders of different sizes will be determined based on this rate.

Although the company sets the price of LPG every month, it is often alleged that the gas is not being sold at the officially fixed rate in the market.

The 12 kg cylinder, which is most commonly used for household cooking purposes, is reportedly being sold at Tk300 to Tk400 above the fixed price by some sellers.

Meanwhile, the price of a 12.5 kg LPG cylinder supplied by a government company has been kept unchanged at Tk825.

On the other hand, the price of auto gas (LPG used in vehicles) has been increased to Tk79.77 per liter from the previous rate of Tk61.83.

BERC has been announcing the price of LPG every month since April 2021. The main components of LPG, propane and butane, are imported from different countries. Every month, the Saudi Arabian company Aramco publishes the price of these two ingredients, which is known as the Saudi Cargo Price (CP).

BERC uses this Saudi CP as the base and adjusts the domestic LPG price accordingly.

The commission calculates the average dollar price for the whole month based on the invoice prices submitted by the importing companies.

Among others, BERC members Dr. Syeda Sultana Razia, Md. Abdur Razzak, Md. Mizanur Rahman, and Brigadier General (Retd.) Md. Shahid Sarwar were present at the press conference.
