Jet fuel price increased by Tk25 per litre

The price of jet fuel, used by aircraft in the country, has been increased once again. 

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the decision in a press release on Tuesday. 

The new price represents an increase of about Tk25 per litre and will take effect from midnight on Tuesday.

Earlier, on March 24, the price of jet fuel was increased by Tk90 in one go. This has resulted in a major rise in fuel prices within a span of one month, which those concerned fear will create new pressure on the country’s aviation sector.

According to the new decision, the price of jet fuel per litre for domestic flights has been fixed at Tk227.08, up from Tk202.29 in March. 

Previously, this fuel was sold at Tk112.41. In other words, the price has almost doubled in a relatively short period.

For international flights, the price has also risen significantly. 

The price per litre has increased from US$1.3216 to US$1.4806.  Earlier, it stood at US$0.7384.

BERC said the price has been adjusted to align with rising international fuel prices, increasing import costs, and the prevailing market situation. 

The new price will remain in effect until further notice.

Those concerned say the increase in jet fuel prices is likely to push up air fares. This may place additional cost pressure on passengers travelling on both domestic and international routes. 

Stakeholders also believe the financial pressure on airlines will rise as operating costs in the sector increase.
