Former VC of Rokeya University Hasibur Rashid arrested

Former Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, Professor Md. Hasibur Rashid has been arrested from a house on Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur at around 8:30 pm on Saturday.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, Mejbah Uddin, said, “Professor Md. Hasibur Rashid is a 10-year-sentenced accused in the Abu Sayeed murder case in Rangpur. There is a warrant against him. That is why he has been arrested.”

The OC also said that inquiries are being made to find out whether there are any more cases against him and he will be sent to court soon.

Professor Hasibur is a convicted accused in the Abu Sayeed murder case in the July movement. 

He resigned from the post of Vice Chancellor on August 9 in the face of students' demands after the government fell on August 5, 2024.

Abu Sayeed, a student of the English department of Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police on July 16 during the quota reform movement.

On that day, students surrounded the residence of Vice-Chancellor Hasibur Rashid, demanding his resignation. He later left the campus under the protection of law enforcement.
