Ivy's bail upheld in two more cases, no bar to release

The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has upheld the interim bail order granted by the High Court in two murder cases filed against former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy. 

The Appellate Division’s Chamber Court has given a 'no order' to the state's application seeking to suspend the bail granted by the High Court. 

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md. Rezaul Haque gave the order on Sunday.

Consequently, Ivy's bail is upheld in a total of 12 cases including those two cases and there is now no legal obstacle to her release, said her lawyers.

Earlier, after the High Court granted bail in 10 cases, Ivy was shown arrested in those two cases of Siddhirganj Police Station. Of these, she was shown arrested in one case on March 2 and in the other case on April 12.

On April 30, the High Court granted interim bail to Ivy in two cases of Siddhirganj Police Station by issuing a rule. The state filed a separate application seeking a stay of this bail. The two applications are listed in the Chamber Court's agenda for today at 41 and 42.

Senior Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju, Advocate SM Siddiqur Rahman and Advocate SM Hridoy Rahman appeared for Ivy in the court while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Sazia Sharmin was present for the state at the hearing.

Earlier, on April 30, the High Court granted interim bail to Ivy in two separate murder cases and issued a rule seeking an explanation from the government as to why she would not be granted permanent bail.

Two cases were filed with Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj on charges of killing Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the July 2024 uprising.

On May 9 last year, the police arrested Ivy in the murder case of garment worker Minarul. Later, she was shown arrested in nine more cases. 

The High Court granted bail to Ivy in all 10 cases on November 9 of the same year and February 26 of this year, following separate bail petitions.
