Pallabi child murder after rape: Chargesheet submitted against two accused

The police have submitted a chargesheet to the court against two accused in the case of the rape and murder of a child in the capital’s Pallabi. 

The two accused in the chargesheet are Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter.

The investigation officer of the case, Ahiduzzaman, submitted the chargesheet on Sunday afternoon, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Prosecution Department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mia Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan.

Earlier on Saturday, the police received the autopsy, forensic and viscera reports. According to those involved in the investigation, they will be able to prove the involvement of the main accused Sohel Rana based on these signs. The forensic report found evidence of rape of the child before murder. Those involved in the investigation said that DNA testing will not be required in this case for the time being. Therefore, DNA testing has not been done yet.

The investigating officer of the case, Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mostaq Sarkar, told Daily Samakal, “We have received the autopsy, forensic and viscera reports. The investigation is almost at its final stage. We have many types of evidence and information to prove the crime. In addition, the accused has confessed to the crime and given a statement. There is no need for DNA evidence testing.”

Police sources said that a total of 15 people, including three eyewitnesses and three family members of the child, have been called as witnesses in the charge sheet. Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter are being accused. Swapna is being accused of trying to hide the body and helping her husband escape.

The body of the second-grade student was recovered from a flat in Pallabi last Tuesday. After the incident, the main accused Sohel Rana escaped by breaking the window grill. 

Police arrested Sohel’s wife Swapna Akhter from the scene and Sohel from Fatulla in Narayanganj in the evening. 

Sohel gave a confessional statement in court last Wednesday. 

Sohel and Swapna are currently in jail.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Law has appointed lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu as the Special Public Prosecutor (PP) to ensure a speedy and fair trial. 

The appointed Special PP said that the state will make efforts to ensure the trial of this brutal murder as soon as possible and to ensure the maximum punishment for the criminals.
