6 newborns die in suspected gas leak at Ad-Din Hospital

Six newborns have died at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Moghbazar area following a suspected gas leakage from an air conditioning unit.
The incident occurred late on Tuesday night in a neonatal ward of the hospital.
All six babies, who were only one or two days old, died within a short period early on Wednesday morning.
Ramna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ashiq Iqbal confirmed that the victims were all newborns.
“An investigation is underway into the cause of the accident and how they died,” he told Daily Samakal.
Ad-Din Hospital Director (Administration) Tariqul Islam verified the deaths but could not immediately provide further details about the cause or the identities of the deceased children.
At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, the hospital’s Director General (Hospitals and Nursing), Professor Dr Nahida Yasmin, described the incident as an accident. “In the ward where this accidental death occurred, there were 11 mothers and six newborn babies. They were one to two days old,” she said.
Hospital authorities have stated that the matter is being taken with utmost seriousness, and the precise cause of death will be determined after thorough investigation and necessary tests.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Division Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Rabbani Hossain said senior officials were at the scene.
“We have learned that six people have died at Ad-Din Hospital. An investigation is underway into how this incident happened,” he added.
Hospital sources reported that panic spread among patients and staff following the incident, with several others falling ill and receiving treatment on site. Law enforcement officials visited the facility shortly after being notified.
A senior Health Department official said that Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bakul and Additional Director General of the Health Department Zahid Raihan would visit the hospital to assess the situation.
Although initial reports pointed to a possible gas leakage from the air conditioning system, hospital authorities have so far been unable to confirm the exact cause.
