6 newborns die at Ad-Din Hospital: Tk3 lakh fined for unhygienic conditions

Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, has been fined Tk3 lakh for failing to maintain a temperature monitoring system and operating in an unhygienic environment.

The penalty was made on Sunday during a joint mobile court operation by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and Dhaka South City Corporation. 

The drive was led by an Executive Magistrate of the Dhaka South City Corporation.

The action comes days after six newborns died in a ward of the hospital on Tuesday night. 

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare formed a three-member probe committee on Wednesday to investigate the cause of the deaths.

Meanwhile, the family of one of the newborns has filed a case with Ramna Police Station, accusing the hospital of negligence.

On Saturday afternoon, Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bakul visited the facility and expressed strong displeasure after noticing a bakery factory on the roof of the hospital building. 

Hospital authorities, however, clarified that the bakery was not located inside Ad-Din Hospital but adjacent to Ad-Din Medical College, and was used solely to prepare and supply food for patients.
