Heavy rains forecast for Chittagong, Ssylhet in early June

After a May marked by intermittent rainfall that kept temperatures relatively bearable, Bangladesh is set to experience a shift in weather patterns in early June, with heavy rains predicted in the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions alongside a slight increase in day and night temperatures that could heighten discomfort from sweltering heat.

The month began with rains but saw a gradual decline in precipitation towards the end, allowing temperatures to rise. 

However, compared to previous years, the country largely avoided prolonged heatwaves, thanks to regular showers that maintained more comfortable conditions for much of May.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s 120-hour special forecast issued on Sunday, a strong western low pressure area is positioned over the North Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to bring rain and thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds across various parts of the country.

Meteorologists have indicated that weather conditions will remain changeable throughout the first week of June, with rain in some areas and sunshine in others. The public has been advised to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms, gusty winds, and periods of heavy rainfall.

The department’s bulletin noted that the western low pressure area extends from West Bengal to the northern Bay of Bengal, which may cause a slight rise in both day and night temperatures nationwide.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, along with gusty winds and lightning, are likely at some places in the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places in the Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Dhaka divisions. Moderate to heavy rain may occur at some locations in the Chittagong division, while other parts of the country are expected to remain mainly dry with temporarily partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures are forecast to stay largely similar across the country until Wednesday. Scattered rain may occur in some areas during this period. Next week, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance towards the Teknaf coast, potentially increasing the overall rainfall trend.
