Former IGP Benazir Ahmed detained in Dubai in ACC graft case

Dubai Police have detained former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed in connection with an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case, according to multiple senior Bangladesh Police officials.

Benazir Ahmed was detained on Friday, June 12, shortly after arriving in Dubai. He is currently being interrogated by Dubai authorities.

The Bangladesh government had issued a red notice against him through Interpol in February 2025 in the same ACC case. A letter from Dubai Interpol confirming his detention reached Bangladesh authorities on June 12.

Sources at police headquarters told Daily Samakal on Sunday morning that the development was verified by at least two Additional IGPs, a DIG, and an AIG. 

The officials confirmed the arrest but declined to make official statements or be named.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “We received official communication from Dubai Interpol on June 12 informing us that Benazir Ahmed had been detained by Dubai Police.”

Another official added that, following the Interpol red notice, Dubai Police acted on the arrest warrant issued in the ACC case.

The Home Ministry has already been informed of the detention. The Home and Foreign Ministries are expected to initiate necessary steps to bring the former IGP back to Bangladesh.
