Former Somoy TV MD Ahmed Zobaer sent to jail

A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of Ahmed Zobaer, former managing director of Somoy Television, and sent him to jail in a case involving allegations of cheating and forgery. 

The court granted bail to three other accused  - Ahmed Rafid Quader Ribhu, Sheikh Mahmud Yasin, and Sunny Chowdhury - who surrendered in the same case.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain issued the order on Thursday. 

The previous day, arrest warrants had been issued against six accused, including Zobaer. Four of the accused then surrendered and sought bail.

According to the case documents, complainant Asaduzzaman accused six individuals, including Zobaer, of cheating, breach of trust, and forgery of documents. On May 10, the court issued summons requiring the accused to appear by June 17. When they failed to do so, arrest warrants were issued. 

The remaining two accused are Zobaer’s wife, Shamima Sultana Chowdhury, and their child, Saraf Nawar Joyita. 

Lawyer Farhad Hossain represented the accused during the hearing.
