Benazir's repatriation process is on progress rapidly: Home Minister

The process of bringing back former IGP Benazir Ahmed, who was arrested in the United Arab Emirates, is progressing very rapidly, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

The Home Minister made the disclosure at a briefing to journalists after formally presenting awards, certificates and financial honorariums to 15 members of the Bangladesh Police at the Home Ministry's conference room at the Secretariat on Saturday.

Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, IGP of Police Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and senior officials of the Home Ministry and the police were present at the event.

The Home Minister said that although the UAE Federal Police had given 30 days for further legal process after the arrest of the accused based on the Interpol Red Notice, the Home Ministry prepared and translated all the necessary documents of 144 pages in just three days and sent them to the UAE government through diplomatic channels.

Stating that the pace of work of the current government is faster than ever before, the minister said, “On June 12, the Federal NCB of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, informed the NCB through an email that they were able to arrest the accused based on the Red Notice issued at the request of Bangladesh. They requested to send the necessary documents within 30 days for further process. We (Home Ministry) were able to complete that in just three days.”

The minister said, “The Home Ministry has implemented the Punishment and Reward policy. In addition to rewarding those who show sincerity and honesty in their duties, departmental action is being taken against police members who are involved in inaction, negligence or corruption.”
