Nationwide police alert issued for June 23 amid security concerns: Salahuddin

Police across the country will be placed on high alert on Tuesday, June 23, in anticipation of the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced on Saturday. 

Speaking to reporters at the Home Ministry conference room inside the Secretariat, the minister cited intelligence reports indicating potential efforts to disrupt law and order on that day. 

"We have intelligence information that they may try to create chaos and unrest in the country on that day," Ahmed said. "The police are always alert to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, and field-level officers have been kept on high alert to foil any kind of sabotage attempt."

In addition to the security alert, the Home Minister provided a significant update on the legal proceedings against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who was recently arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) pursuant to an Interpol Red Notice. 

Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the extradition process is progressing rapidly. Following Benazir's arrest, the UAE Federal Police requested necessary legal documents within a 30-day window to proceed with further action. However, the Home Ministry completed, translated, and transmitted a 144-page dossier to UAE authorities through diplomatic channels in just three days.

Highlighting the current government's accelerated operational pace, Salahuddin Ahmed detailed the timeline of the arrest. "On June 12, the Federal NCB of Abu Dhabi informed our NCB via email that they had arrested the accused based on the Red Notice issued at Bangladesh's request," the minister said. "They requested the necessary documents within 30 days for further proceedings. We were able to complete that in just three days."

Earlier in the day's proceedings, 15 members of the Bangladesh Police were formally awarded medals, certificates, and financial honorariums in recognition of their bravery, dedication, and humanitarian service during four distinct special operations.
