Three DU teachers suspended, two dismissed

The Dhaka University administration has suspended three pro-Awami League teachers for threatening students and engaging in controversial activities by siding with the fascist Awami League in the July Uprising. 

They are Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam of the Banking and Insurance Department, Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalim Ullah of the Public Administration Department, and Professor AKM Jamal Uddin of the Sociology Department.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the university's highest decision-making forum, the Syndicate, on Monday night. 

Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam presided over the meeting. 

A syndicate member who did not wish to be named confirmed this information to Daily Samakal.

Two more teachers were relieved from academic activities temporarily at the meeting. 

Among them is Professor Mohammad Azmal Hossain Bhuiyan of the Botany Department. He has also been removed from academic activities temporarily for his involvement in the July Uprising.

Another is teacher Chowdhury Md Tashik-E-Habib, who was discussed on social media for singing songs. He has been temporarily relieved from academic activities based on complaints from teachers and students of the department. He was accused of tarnishing the image of the university through social media.

In addition, former Chhatra League leader and university deputy registrar Lovlu Molla Shishir has been temporarily suspended for his critical role in the July Movement.

The meeting cancelled the post of General Secretary (GS) of Golam Rabbani, who was elected from the Chhatra League panel in the 2019 DUCSU elections, and sent the GS candidate for the post, Rashed Khan, for consideration for the opinion of the law adviser. 

Earlier, in November last year, the Academic Council had recommended that the admission of former Chhatra League General Secretary Golam Rabbani to the MPhil programme be cancelled as it was not done in a proper manner and at the same time, his GS post in the 2019 DUCSU elections be declared invalid.

In this regard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane said that those who have been temporarily suspended had various allegations related to the July Uprising. 

In addition, this decision was taken against Professor Azmal as per the recommendation of the Academic Committee based on allegations of threatening students and insulting female students about their clothes.
