1,500 traffic cases registered by AI cameras: DMP Commissioner

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed inaugurated the traffic case filing and vehicle monitoring programme through AI cameras on Lake Road in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area on Tuesday. 

He was the chief guest at the event held at the Traffic Tejgaon Division office premises and visited the AI camera control room during the programme.

The commissioner said about 1,500 cases have been registered since the launch of the AI cameras. Previously, such cameras were operational at 15 intersections in the capital. With four more added on Tuesday, the total now stands at 19 intersections. 

The authorities plan to install them at other important intersections across the metropolis in phases, he added.

He explained that when a case is registered through AI cameras, a message is sent to the mobile phone of the person concerned, while case documents are posted to the vehicle owner’s address. After the fine is paid at the traffic office, it is updated in the system. Nearly 38,000 traffic violation summons remain pending.

The Dhaka police chief noted that traffic congestion has been significantly reduced through strategic diversion systems at key intersections and by closing unnecessary crossings. 

The installation of AI cameras has also improved drivers’ lane discipline and adherence to traffic signals, leading to visible enhancements in traffic management, he said.

He added that the technology automatically detects violations such as exceeding speed limits, dangerous lane changes, riding motorcycles without helmets, or illegal parking. Cases are filed digitally through “e-prosecution” directly from the command centre, allowing vehicle owners or drivers to settle them transparently. This eliminates the need for traffic police to physically stop vehicles on the road, thereby reducing risks to officers’ lives.

In response to a question, the commissioner said the DMP could not remove battery-powered auto-rickshaws from the capital on its own and that coordinated efforts with relevant ministries and stakeholders are under way. Senior officials from the DMP Traffic Department attended the inauguration event.
