Sayedabad Bus Terminal to be relocated to Kanchpur

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given in-principle approval to the proposal to shift the Sayedabad Inter-District Bus Terminal to Kanchpur in order to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka. 

The proposal was approved in a meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

According to sources from the meeting, the Prime Minister has instructed that the new terminal in Kanchpur be made usable within the next four months. Therefore, it has been decided to implement the project through the state-owned Chittagong Dry Dock Limited of the Bangladesh Navy using the Direct Procurement Method (DPM).

Sources said that the work titled ‘Construction of sheds, ticket counters, toilets and office rooms, including ancillary facilities’ at the Kanchpur Bus Terminal has received in-principle approval for implementation through the direct procurement method.

It is learnt that the Prime Minister directed the relocation of the Sayedabad Bus Terminal to Kanchpur to ease traffic congestion in Dhaka city and to modernise traffic management. In view of this, the Local Government Department has directed the Dhaka South City Corporation to construct the necessary infrastructure and complete other activities to make the proposed terminal in Kanchpur usable within four months.

The estimated cost of the project is Tk68.82 million.

Under the package, about 4,012 square metres of platform will be cast and tiles will be laid, sheds will be constructed using 15,573 kg of profile sheets, 120 ticket counters, 32 toilets, office rooms, partitions and other necessary ancillary facilities will be built.

Those concerned believe that the opening of the new bus terminal in Kanchpur will reduce traffic pressure in the Sayedabad area and bring positive changes in traffic management in the eastern part of the capital.
