Heavy rain warning across the country, to continue for a week

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain across the country for the next week. 

The BMD's 48-hour heavy rain warning says that heavy to very heavy rain may occur in some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions.

The BMD, issuing a heavy rainfall warning, said that due to the active monsoon winds, there may be heavy to very heavy (188 mm) rainfall in some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions in 24 hours. 

Due to the very heavy rainfall, temporary waterlogging may occur in some places in Dhaka metropolis, it said.

Heavy to very heavy rains may occur in many places in the remaining seven divisions of the country except Chattogram division today, Tuesday and Wednesday. At the same time, due to heavy rainfall in Meghalaya and Assam in India, there is a risk of sudden or short-term flooding in the low-lying areas of Sherpur, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sylhet and Sunamganj due to heavy rainfall upstream.

Meteorologist Md. Omar Faruk said,  “There is a possibility of heavy rain in all seven divisions on Tuesday. The rainfall trend may increase further in the southern regions from Wednesday. There is a possibility of rain in the capital as well.”

According to the BMD, in addition to the active monsoon winds, the new clouds formed in the northwest Bay of Bengal are contributing to the increase in rainfall. The axis of the monsoon extension extends to Assam through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and southern parts of Bangladesh. An extension of this extends to the northwest Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is active in Bangladesh and moderate in the north Bay of Bengal.

The weather forecast says that light to moderate rain and thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are likely to occur in most places in Barishal and Chattogram divisions and many places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions today, Tuesday. Along with this, moderate to heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in some places in the country. Daytime temperatures may increase slightly across the country. Night temperatures may remain almost unchanged.

On Wednesday, light to moderate rain and thundershowers with gusty winds are likely to occur at most places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at many places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Along with this, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

On Thursday, light to moderate rain and thundershowers with gusty winds are likely to occur at most places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at many places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Along with this, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places in the country.

On Friday, light to moderate rain and thundershowers with gusty winds are likely to occur at most places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at many places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Along with this, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places in the country.

On Saturday, light to moderate rain and thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely in many places in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and in some places in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Along with this, moderate to heavy rains are likely in some parts of the country.
