President Sahabuddin resigns

President Md. Sahabuddin has resigned from office, putting an end to swirling rumours.

The President confirmed his decision on Friday afternoon, telling reporters: “It is well known, what is the use of hearing it from my mouth? I am sick, so it is done.”

In a related development, Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) has convened an emergency press conference at the National Parliament.

The briefing is scheduled to take place in the oath-taking room this Friday at around 5pm.

Sources within the Parliament Secretariat indicated that the Speaker or his representative is expected to address the media, with speculation that the acceptance of President Sahabuddin’s resignation may be formally announced.

The Speaker cut short his medical visit to Bangkok and returned to Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

He had travelled to Thailand on July 19, with an original return date of July 26, but was asked by senior government figures to bring his itinerary forward in response to the unfolding situation.
