2 killed, 6 injured as boundary wall collapses in Mirpur

Two people were killed and at least six others injured when a boundary wall behind Mirpur University College collapsed in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the Love Road-Mandir Road area while the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) was selling products. 

Crowds had gathered in a long queue beside the college wall to collect the goods when the structure suddenly gave way, crushing several men and women under the debris.

Locals began rescue efforts immediately. Police and fire service personnel later arrived and transferred the injured to hospitals. 

One of the deceased was identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of nearby Janata Housing. She was taken to Pangu Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. 

A 40-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 

Another woman remains in critical condition there.

Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Mostaq Sarkar told Daily Samakal that seven to eight people were trapped when the wall collapsed onto the sidewalk. Two of them, including a woman, later died in hospital. 

He said it has not been confirmed whether the victims had come specifically to buy TCB products, noting that people were both queuing on the road and walking on the sidewalk at the time. 

The matter will be clarified during the investigation, the police official added.
